Sweden

Sweden is one of the northernmost European countries. Famous for things like IKEA, Volvo and many other inventions, Sweden has great industry, but also beautiful nature. When you’re driving through Sweden, it feels like every corner you turn brings you to another lake. In the summer, Sweden experiences a midnight sun – and the opposite in winter: almost 20 hours of darkness.

Being half Swedish, I’m very lucky to have grown up visiting Sweden five times, between my preteen and adult years. My most recent trip was bringing my husband and two children with me to explore our family history. Swedes have a culture of spending time in nature, which my grandparents enstilled on me and that I want to instill on my two kids.

Key Things to Know About Sweden

National language: Swedish, it’s a Nordic language closely related to Danish and Norwegian. There are minority populations who speak Sámi, Finnish, Arabic and others
Currency: Kronor (‘crowns’ in English). Sweden is a part of the EU, but has rejected adopting the Euro as their currency. Nowadays, they are mostly a cashless society, so you don’t need to worry about exchanging money – just bring your credit cards and digital payment methods
