29 Best Babymoon Destinations in North America
Are you pregnant, and looking for the best babymoon destinations in the US, Canada or Mexico? Congratulations -you’re in the right place.
Part of what makes somewhere a ‘good’ babymoon destination is that it has:
There are many great destinations that fit this criteria, but the best babymoon destination for you will depend on what you and your partner enjoy.
As a mom who is obsessed with travel, I’ve done a lot of travelling both before and after my kids were born (and yes, while pregnant too.) In fact, I’ve been pregnant in 5 different countries in total, and have taken 4 long-hault flights while pregnant.
This article will focus on North American destinations (US, Canada and Mexico), as its much easier on travel for expectant moms on this side of the world; regardless of where they’re at in their pregnancy.
17 Best Babymoon Destinations in the US
1. Lake Placid, New York
Best time to go: May through October
Lake Placid is a small tourist town with lots of scenic beauty, hiking. It has luxury accommodations, lakeside restaurants and boutique shopping on the main street.
It has a small town, and romantic feel to it. A friend of mine got engaged, and held her wedding in Lake Placid. It wasn’t until I went to her wedding there that I could see why – its a beautiful place, and would be great for a babymoon for those who enjoy scenic beauty and small town charm.
Lake Placid has a small town feel (similar feel to Stars Hollow if you ever watched Gilmore Girls) but there’s lots to do in the area:
- Take a stroll on the main street, shop for unique Adirondack souvenirs, and have dinner with a lakeside view
- Go for an easy hike. Some suggestions are Cobble Lookout (3 miles or 2 km), Mount Joe (1 mile or 1.6 km) or Baxter Mountain (2.9 miles or 4.7 km)
- Take the ‘most breathtaking 30-minute walk’ in the Adirondacks at High Falls Gorge, a 22-acre property with views of streams and waterfalls
- Discover fascinating local history at John Brown’s Farm (an abolitionist) or sports and Olympic history at the Olympic Center
I recommend staying at the Crowne Plaza in Lake Placid (I attended a friend’s wedding there) – its elegant, rustic, has lake views, a great breakfast, and an awesome swimming pool. It’s right on main street and close to everything.
2. Lake Tahoe
Best time to go: Year round, but for a babymoon it would be best from May to November
Lake Tahoe, nestled on the boarder of California and Nevada, is for sure a bucket list destination in the US that you can visit year-round.
Spring through fall would be best for a babymoon, because winter is more about skiing and the driving can be challenging.
My brother used to live in Lake Tahoe, and we travelled here with our toddler. It’s very laid back and family friend, but there are a lot of fun activities such as:
- Taking a boat out onto the lake (you can see down to the bottom)
- Walking around Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe, and taking the gondola to the top of the mountain for an amazing view
- Going on some of the easier hikes
- Walk along the East Shoreline Trail, which runs along the east side of the lake from North Lake Tahoe
- Exploring cute small towns such as Truckee and Virginia City
If you want to stay somewhere quieter, then I recommend Graity Haus in North Lake Tahoe. To be more ‘where its at’ then the Marriot Grand Residence Club in South Lake Tahoe is a great option right in Heavenly Village (close to food an activities.)
3. Virginia Beach
Best time to go: May through October
Virginia Beach is a great place to go if you beaches, swimming, outdoor activities and relaxing. It’s very family-friendly, but great for couples as well.
The boardwalk along Virginia Beach is one of the longest in the world, and its boarded by a sandy beach with medium-height waves.
My cousin used to go to Virginia Beach on romantic getaways with his wife before they had kids – its one of the less obvious, underrated destinations that you don’t hear about much.
Here are some good babymoon activities for Virginia Beach:
- Get ice cream or play mini-golft along the amazing oceanfront boardwalk
- Have a beach day at Croatan beach, a public beach mostly frequented by locals
- Go on a dolphin watching boat tour
- Enjoy comfort American food at Hearth restaurant – delicious food, nice ambiance and good portions. See menu here
- Get outdoors for relaxing trail walks through the forest at First Landing State Park
I recommend getting the Hyatt House on the beach. It has oceanfront rooms with comfy beds, buffet breakfast included and an indoor pool.
4. Florida Keys
Best time to go: October through March
The Florida Keys is all scenic beauty, beaches, charming small towns, wildlife, boating, swimming
In addition, if you love animals, the Florida Keys a great place to visit. You can visit the Sea Turtle Hospital, and the Dolphin Discovery Centre. This was the main reason why we chose to visit – I love marine life.
While scuba diving isn’t recommended while pregnant, snorkeling is generally safe and is a popular activity in the Keys. (Talk to your doctor before booking any snorkel tours to be safe.)
Things to do in the Florida Keys for a babymoon:
- Admire the pastel-coloured houses in the old district of Key West
- Go on a snorkel tour. I recommend this one, because it’s the shortest, and good value (2.5 hours and about $60 per person)
- Visit the turtle hospital and Dolphin Discovery Centre
If you choose the Keys for your babymoon, I recommend the Tranquility Bay Resort located right on the white sand beach. It has rustic ‘beach house’ style resorts, and on-site restaurant
5. Nashville
Best time to go: spring, summer and fall
Nashville is a great place to visit as a couple if you haven’t been before. Being ‘the music city,’ it does a lot of bachelor(ette) partiers, but it can also be a great babymoon destination too.
Nashville is best for babymoon couples who are big fans of music, enjoy live entertainment, shopping, nightlife, bars and museums.
I just went to Nashville last year, and it was fun, lively and pretty warm (even in September.) I loved the live music, and all the things to do on Broadway Avenue.
Things to do in Nashville during a babymoon:
- Catch an evening show at the Grand Ole Opry (2-2.5 hours)
- See some live music at several bars on Broadway. (Tip: Bring your ID – they ID everyone under 50 and are very strict.)
- Go on a narrated bus tour to see celebrity homes (Taylor Swift, Reese Witherspoon, Garth Brooks and so many others)
- Explore history by visiting Andrew Jacksonโs Hermitage (home of the 7th US president)
- Do the Nashville true crime night tour (90 minute walking tour in the evening)
I’ll warn you, Broadway avenue is loud, day and night. It’s great to visit, but I recommend staying somewhere in the outskirts; somewhere quiet so you can get a good night’s rest!
Hilton Nashville Downtown provide a comfortable, upscale experience just a block away from Broadway avenue. So, its close enough to everything but quiet enough at night to get some decent shut eye
8. Rustic Inn Lodge & Spa in Wyoming
Best time to go: Year round
Wyoming has the best of both worlds in what I personally look for in a babymoon – beautiful scenery and views, but also several rustic-style luxury accommodations where you can be relax and be pampered.
I recommend staying at the Rustic Inn Lodge & Spa in Wyoming. They have a lovely on-site spa that offers pregnancy massages for 50-60 minutes.
Things to do in the area, near the Rustic Inn Lodge & Spa:
- Go hiking in Grand Tenton National Park
- Admire life-size animal statues at the National Museum of Wildlife Art
- Spot wildlife at the National Elk Refuge
The Rustic Inn Lodge in Wyoming is a great place to mix relaxation and an elevated experience with beauty and nature – perfect for a babymoon.
Book your stay at Rustic Inn Lodge & Spa here
9. San Francisco
Best time to go: year round, but ideal for summer and fall
San Francisco is a great place to visit for a mix of large city with scenic beauty combined. The “city by the bay” is great for people who love the best of both worlds.
San Fransisco very pedestrian friendly, with world-class attractions and stunning Atlantic ocean views. They have a great public transportation system too, so its easy to get a break from being on their feet.
Los Angeles is another obvious choice in California, but it is much larger than San Francisco.
Of the two, for a babymoon – I would recommend San Francisco because it has a more relaxed vibe, and its easier to get around.
Things to do in San Francisco for a babymoon:
- Get lots of photos with the Golden Gate Bridge, and walk over the bridge
- Take a 15-minute ferry ride to Alcatraz to learn about the famous history of the prison
- Visit Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf. Watch the seals sunning on the docks, visit the chocolate shop, the aquarium and eat at one of the many restaurants
- Take a ride on one of the cable cars (historic city trams) which have been running for over 150 years and used in countless movies
- Head to Oracle Park to catch a San Francisco Giant’s game
I recommend staying at the The Fairmont Heritage Place Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco, which is only a 2-minute walk from Fisherman’s Wharf
10. Biltimore Spa in Ashville, North Carolina
Best time to go: year round
Asheville is nestled right in the Blue Ridge Mountain range, surrounded by lush forests, and dramatic landscapes.
There are so many reasons to visit Asheville, and why it makes for a great babymoon – nice downtown with an art scene, great food, luxury accommodations where you can be pampered.
Most people enjoy staying at the Biltmore in Asheville, which is a historic castle-like hotel. The spa at Biltimore offers prenantal massages past the first trimester upon request.
There’s a ton to do at Biltimore, and in Asheville, so you could easily make a weekend of it or even a few days.
There’s a really nice guide on an experience with a babymoon in Asheville here in December. It just goes to show that Asheville is a good year-round babymoon destination.
11. Oahu, Hawaii
Best time to go: Year round
If you don’t mind a longer flight (be sure to clear with your doctor first) then Hawaii is one of the ultimate babymoon destinations in the US.
You can’t beat the pristine beaches, lush forests, mountains and the unique Hawaiien culture and food, which often consists of fresh, local fruits and other ingredients.
You’ll love the Turtle Bay Resort on the island of Oahu – the views are incredible, and they have a spa on-site that offers prenatal massages.
Pro Tip: Since babymooning in Hawaii does involve a longer flight, I would recommend choosing Oahu island, over the others. Oahu is the only island in Hawaii that offers sufficient medical care in the (unlikely) even that you need it. If you prefer to air on the side of caution, then choose Oahu.
Luckily, Ohahu is not only beautiful, but there are so many amazing things to do there on a babymoon.
Things to do on Oahu Island:
- Have a romantic picnic on the beach with a luxury charcuterie board and bottled water provided (2 hours and $200 per person, food included) Book here.
- Visit Kualoa Ranch, a working ranch with breathtaking beauty. It was used in Jurassic Park and many other movies!
- Learn about history by doing a tour of Pearl Harbour
- Take a Hawaiien Sea Turtle Chocolate Decorating class (1.5 hours)
12. Stowe, Vermont
Best time to go: May through October (November through Aprils is popular too, although its ski season). Fall colours peak in early October
Stowe is small town, with lots of nature-based activities. It would be perfect for a romantic weekend getaway babymoon for couples who enjoy the peace of secluded nature and visiting lesser-known places.
Here are the things you could do in Stowe during a babymoon:
- Stroll through the main street of Stowe, which is very quaint and walkable
- Take a gondola to the top of Mansfield Mountain. (You can also drive to the top, but take a lot of caution.) Make reservations well in advance to eat at Cliff House Restaurant which has stunning views and great food
- Explore caves and trails at Smuggler’s Notch State Park
I recommend staying at the Trapp Family Lodge, especially if you’re a Sound of Music fan. The Tรคlta Lodge is also very nice, a nice escape just 5 minutes from downtown Stowe
13. Michigan Upper Peninsula
Best time to go: Anytime but winter
Nope, I’m not kidding about this suggestion. If you haven’t Googled photos of Northern Michigan yet, you should – its underrated in terms of its beauty.
Northern Michigan (both the lower and Upper Peninsula) has waterfalls, charming small towns, historic mines, incredibly scenic drives, and a lot of history and culture.
If you come in fall, you’re in for a treat for the colours. A Northern Michigan babymoon would be best for the outdoorsy adventurous couple.
Things to do in Northern Michigan for a babymoon:
- Take a ferry to the car-free Mackinac Island, and spend a night or two. Try local fudge, ride a horse-drawn carriage (the popular way to get around.) Get beautiful views of the rocky shoreline of Lake Superior from the Mackinac Island State Park
- Visit Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park, and do the easy Sleeping Bear Point Trail (2.8 miles or 4.5 km)
- Visit downtown Leland and see the historic fish town
- See the mushroom houses in Charlevoix (you can even rent one to stay in!)
- Drive along the Brockway Mountain Drive, which is known as being one of the most scenic drives in the US. It’s 9 miles (14.4 km) and connects Copper Harbor to Eagle Harbour
- Take a raft across the Kitch-iti-Kipi, the largest freshwater spring in the state
- Go hiking in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park
Pro Tip: Northern Michigan can also be done as a road trip anywhere from 3-10 days; starting in Detroit and ending in the Northern Peninsula. (I recommend flying into Detroit, and then flying out of Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport.) See an example 7-day itinerary here
14. Las Vegas
Best time to go: March through May, or September through November (the summer months are popular too but can very hot
Vegas has the party atmosphere which its known for, but there’s so much to do outside of that. Its very family friendly too, and works well for a romantic getaway too.
I recommend Las Vegas as a honeymoon to expectant parents looking for live entertainment, nightlife, scenic beauty, foodie adventures and relaxing. It’s a good babymoon destination for a couple that likes having lots of things to do.
Things to do in Las Vegas during a babymoon:
- Walk along the famous Vegas strip
- See the Bellagio Light Show
- Visit the Neon Museum (it’s hard to describe it, but its just really cool – lots of photo ops, interesting history. A guided tour is worth it.)
- Take a gondola ride at The Venetian (made to look and feel exactly like the ones in real Venice)
- Erotic Heritage Museum. It’s very inclusive, informative and shows you a different side to the sex and porn industry
- Escape the city to see stunning dessert formations at Valley of Fire State Park.
For a babymoon to Las Vegas, stay at The Venetian Resort which is a glamorous hotel with luxurious and relaxing experiences for couples. Another good option is the famous Caesar’s Palace
15. Seattle
Best time to go: April through November (but it doesn’t get too cold in winter)
Seattle is a coastal city nicknamed “The Emerald City” because of its surrounding evergreen forests. With a population still under 1 million, Seattle has a small, relaxed atmosphere and is great for its foodie scene, coffee culture, and lots of outdoor activities.
It has an abundance of fresh local produce, farmers markets, distinct little neighbourhoods, and proximity to hiking. It’s a great weekend getaway for a babymoon for the couple who like the mix of an exciting city, but lots of outdoor beauty too.
Things to do during a babymoon in Seattle:
- Visit museums, there are so many great ones to choose from – The Space Museum, the Art Museum, the Chihuly Garden and Glass (pictured above)
- Ride up the Space Needle for a few of the city and the Pacific Ocean
- Do the Seattle Coffee Crawl, and/or the chocolate tour which are basically a sightseeing tours where you also get to sample coffee or chocolate
- Check out the Seattle Aquarium (small, right on the lakefront – great for kids, or but we enjoyed visiting as adults too)
- Do the Seattle Underground Tour, which has an amazing story and history
- Take a ferry ride to either Kingston or Bainbridge Island and get a view of the Seattle skyline. Ride back to Seattle at night. Seeing the city lit up was so romantic
- Do a tasting tour of the Park Place Market
- Do a Boeing Factory Tour (4.5 hours, transportation for provided) to see how commercial airplanes are made. We did this, and it was awesome – its a must for couples who are interested in mechanics, airplanes and aerospace!
16. A Cruise
Best time to go: Year-round
A cruise is a relaxing carefree way to for couples to travel, and a babymoon is no different. Most cruise companies require you to be less than 24 weeks pregnant in order to board.
I’d recommend a Disney Cruise (perfect for couples who are young at heart) out of Cape Caneveral, or an Alaskan Cruise- which are perfect if you want to avoid hot climates while pregnant.
Disney Cruise
Disney Cruises tend to be pricier than other cruises, but they have less of a party atmosphere than other cruises (there are no casinos) which make them nice for a fun and relaxing babymoon.
Disney Cruises are also very popular option for adult couples – there are several adult-only areas on all the ships; spas, swimming pools, bars, bingo areas, and restaurants.
I’ve taken two Disney Cruises out of Cape Canerveral. Most of the cruises leaving from there take you to Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, which is a beautiful place to relax.
The best part is, many of the Disney Cruises are only 3 nights at sea, so its a great option if you don’t want to spend too much time on a cruise.
If you’re interested in space at all, you could combine a Disney Cruise with a visit to the Kennedy Space Center which is also in Cape Caneveral.
Alaskan Cruise
The landscapes in Alaska are stunning, and Alaskan cruises are a nice way to cruise in an environment that isn’t too hot.
Alaskan cruises are offered by several providers – Disney, Princess, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises, to name a few.
Pro Tip: Most Alaskan cruises are about 7 days long, but they can be as long as 14 days.
17. Nantucket, Massachusettes
Best time to go: beaches, quaint historic architecture, bike paths (both challenging and easy)
If you’ve read any books by Elin Hilderbrand, you know what a fancy vacation destination Nantucket can be.
Nantucket is a beautiful, small and walkable island off the coast of Cape Cod, with sandy beaches, quaint historic homes, trails for biking and walking.
Things to do on Nantucket during a babymoon:
- Do the Sconset Bluff Walk – a very scenic (and easy) walking path made from white sea shells. Stop at Sconset Beach which is quiet and often empty
- Admire the architecture – pre civil war homes that have been lovingly restored, and lighthouses along the shore.
- Learn about Nantucket’s marine history which goes back 300 years at the Whaling Museum
- Relax on beaches. Nantucket has so many of them, sandy with amazing sunsets
Nantucket Hotel & Resort offers a special Babymoon Package which includes free breakfast, shuttle service, chocolate covered strawberries, and a prenatal massage.
9 Best Babymoon Destinations in Canada
1. Niagara Falls
Best time to go: Year-round
Niagara Falls has a bit of everything. The Canadian side is like a mini-Vegas. It’s a popular romantic destination for couples, because it has scenic beauty, luxury accommodations, spas, entertainment, nightlife, casinos, shopping.
It’s also pretty accessible year round. It’s most popular in summer, but Niagara Falls in winter is a lot of fun too.
I would recommend heading to Niagara on the Lake, which is about 25 minutes from Niagara Falls. It’s the perfect place for a romantic weekend, and you’ll see why if you look it up.
Things to do during a babymoon in the Niagara Falls or area
- Ride the Hornblower (American side) or Made of the Mist (Canadian side)
- Walk through the Butterfly Conservatory, and watch dozens of colourful butterflies fly around freely
- Admire the falls all lit up at night
- Both have great food on site, excellent wines, helpful staff and scenic views to look onto through large windows.
- If you rent a car, you can venture off into the Niagara region to see waterfalls, and several cute Ontario towns
2. Montreal
Best time to go: foodie adventures, historic downtown, nightlife, shopping, year-round travel
Montreal is the foodie capital of Canada, which is why I mention it first. It’s perfect for hungry expectant moms.
Some of the staple foods in Montreal are pretty simple (pregnancy safe) such as bagels and poutine. There’s also a great southeast Asian food scene. But you can find all kinds of food in Montreal; people come here just to eat.
Things to do in Montreal on a babymoon
- Ride the ferris wheel (called La Grande Roue), the tallest of its kind in Canada at 196 feet, for a great view of the surrounding city and St. Lawrence River
- Walk through the cobbled streets on Old Town, admire the architecture and go inside the Notre Dame Basilica church
- Walk, or drive up to the top of Mont Royal to get a view of the city from above
- Head to Montreal Olympic park. Check out the Planetarium, Biosphere, and Insectarium
- Explore the foodie scene. You can do a Montreal food tour (2 hours long) or check out lots of different restaurants suited to your tastes!
Pro Tip: If you can’t choose between Quebec City and Montreal, then I have a Montreal and Quebec City itinerary here, that can be done in 5-6 days.
3. Quebec City
Best time to go: Year round (spring is probably the least exciting time to visit)
Quebec City has a fortified historic old town which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s only about 2 hours away from Montreal but has a completely different ambiance.
While both cities can be very romantic, Quebec City has more of a quaint ‘European’ feel (it doesn’t feel like North America at all.) It’s perfect for a lover’s getaway.
I’ve been to Quebec City with my husband, my best friend and my kids. There’s lots to do, and while it doesn’t have the same food diversity as Montreal – the food is quite good. Especially if you’re down for French Canadian food, such as mouthwatering poutine and crรชpes – you can find those anywhere.
There are so many things in Quebec City on a babymoon, such as:
- Exploring the Old Town; walking down Rue Petit Champlain to see the boutique shops
- Get a break from walking by taking the funicular, which is a 122 year old machine that transports you from upper to lower Old Town
- Visiting the beautiful Montmorency Falls, which is 15 minutes from Quebec City. (Read my post on how to get to Montmorency Falls.)
- Touring the Citadel to learn about Canadian history
Quebec City is cold in the winter, but there festivals and events that happen every month of the year – so it depends on your timing and preference when you visit.
In Quebec City in winter, you can do really unique things like see North America’s only ice hotel, or take part in Carnival (the largest winter festival in North America.)
In the summer, you can take a boat cruise on the St. Lawrence River, and enjoy the city when its at its warmest. When I went to Quebec City in summer, there were so many outdoor seating at bistros and restaurants; it was nice to be able to sit outside, enjoying the ambiance of the Old Town over a meal.
The ultimate luxury place to stay in Quebec City is the Chateau Frontenac, which is the most photographed hotel in Canada. Rooms there can be pricy, sometimes costing $1,000 CAD per night. A more budget-friendly option would be Hotel Manoir Esplanade
4. Toronto
Best time to go: year round (winters are pretty chilly, but there isn’t usually a lot of snow.)
Toronto is a large cosmopolitan city with exciting attractions, great for foodie adventures. It also has good shopping and nightlife.
It would make a great babymoon for couples who enjoy fun and excitement and having lots of things to do.
I live near Toronto, and did a babymoon here myself. It’s a walkable city, with unique neighbourhoods. A good blend of excitement and entertainment, but also culture, and places to relax outdoors.
Things to do during a babymoon in Toronto:
- Have a meal with a view at the CN Tower, which is the highest observation deck in the western hemisphere
- Eat your way through the colourful Kensington Market, via a food tour or on your own
- Visit the Toronto Beaches, which are a unique little neighbourhood east of the city
- Take a boat ride in the Toronto harbour for a view of the skyline
- Visit the Royal Ontario Museum, the largest museum in Canada
- Take a day trip to Niagara Falls (another place I went for a babymoon.) There are many ways to get to Niagara from Toronto, public transit and driving, all which takes around 2 hours.
5. Banff, Alberta
Best time to go: year round
Banff National Park is the most visited national park in Canada, but for a good reason. The views are absolutely stunning.
Banff is beautiful year round, but the summer months (May through September) will be warmer and have the highest chance of the lakes being thawed.
Banff is very popular in winter too; mostly for skiing which wouldn’t be feasible for a babymoon. However, there are many winter hikes and activities to do in Banff in winter.
Other things to do in Banff during a babymoon:
- Go window shopping on Banff avenue in downtown Banff, buy some unique Canadian souvenirs
- Relax, and admire the flowers and views from the Cascade of Time Garden
- Take leisurely (and easy) walk along the Banff Legacy Trail, or the Bow River Falls Trail
- Take shuttles to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake the two most iconic views in Canada
- Ride the Banff Gondola, and the Lake Louise Gondola for stunning views.
See our 3-5 day Banff Itinerary for tips on how to plan a trip to Banff regardless of the time of year.
If you want to see Jasper as well (about 3 hours from Banff, and the second most popular national park), I recommend take a drive along the Icefields Parkway which is probably one of the most scenic drives in the world. See our Banff + Jasper Itinerary here to plan a trip to both national parks in the rockies.
6. Vancouver, BC
Best time to go: Anytime (winter is cold, but more mild than other cities in Canada)
Unlike other cosmopolitan Canadian cities like Toronto, Vancouver is a lot more nature based. A lot of the attractions are built around the outdoors. It’s a beautiful city surrounded by mountains, so its best for couples that want to take advantage of that.
Here are some things you can do in Vancouver during a babymoon:
- Spend a day in Stanley Park, and take a leisurely walk along the sea wall, and see the totem poles
- Walk over the Capilano Suspension Bridge, which is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. Free shuttles are provided by the city, and take 15 minutes to get there
- Visit the historic Gastown, and indulge in some delicious food options (I personally love the food in Chinatown too, which is a short walk from Gastown.)
- See views of the surrounding city and mountains from the Vancouver Lookout, 533 feet in the air
Check out our Vancouver Itinerary here (2 or 3 day options.)
7. St. John’s, Newfoundland
Best time to go: May through September
St. John’s is a picturesque city on the Atlantic ocean, with colourful buildings and a cute harbour.
If you’re looking for a ‘hot’ destination, this isn’t it – but Newfoundland is great for couples who are looking for something off the beaten path, don’t mind a bit of cold, and enjoy outdoor activities regardless of the weather.
Things to do during a babymoon in St. John’s:
- Admire the colourful houses on Jellybean Row
- Do a tour of Signal Hill National Historic Site, for views of the city and of the ocean.
- Spend some time in Quidi Vidi Village, a small fishing community
- Visit Cape Spear Lighthouse, which is the easternmost point in all of North America
- See ice burgs (even in the summertime!), puffins, and other wildlife
8. Prince Edward Island
Best time to go: Anytime but winter
Prince Edward Island (PEI) is an island-province, and the smallest of all the Canadian provinces. It has 800 km of coastline, and is famous for two main things:
- It’s red sad, which looks almost orangey when you see it in person
- Being the setting for the Anne of Green Gables novels, which although aimed at children are some of the most famous books set in Canada
Unfortuntely, there are quite a few adventure activities like whale watching in PEI (and Cape Breton, which is our next suggestion) which wouldn’t be well suited to pregnancy because of the choppy waters.
But there are a number of other things to do in Eastern Canada that are fun, relaxing and safe for pregnancy.
Things to do in Prince Edward Island on a babymoon:
- Visit Charlottetown, the largest city on the island. See the Anne of Green Gables play, even if you haven’t read the books. (I loved the play, and I enjoyed it even though I didn’t read the books.) Get a prenatal massage at Pure Spa in town
- Visit beaches, and admire the red sand. One of the most popular is ‘singing sands’ beach in Basin Head Provincial Park
9. Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
Best time to go: spring through fall (the fall colours in September and October are stunning)
Cape Breton Island in Eastern Canada is all about scenic drives, and breathtaking cliffside views over the Atlantic Ocean.
There are also scenic hikes, quaint small towns and marinas. It’s best for couples who want to get outdoors.
Things to do in Cape Breton on a babymoon
- Take the most scenic drive along the stunning Cabot Trail, which looks out onto the ocean. The total distance of the Capot Trail is 298 km (185 miles)
- Go hiking. One of the highlights of Cape Breton is the hiking trails. There are many challenging ones, but lots of easy ones to do when you’re pregnant
- See wildlife. (We saw several moose, and bald eagels on our trip to Cape Breton!)
- Visit the town of Baddeck, which is where the start of the Cabot Trail is
- See the famous lighthouse in Neil’s Harbour
- Enjoy the live music scene. Several of the small towns in Cape Breton have live music in the evenings
Anywhere from 2-4 days is a good amount of time to spend in Cape Breton, but you could easily spend a week there. This is a great guide here to help plan a trip to Cape Breton.
3 Best Babymoon Destinations in Mexico
I spent part of one of my pregnancies in Mexico. Mexico has excellent medical care at some facilities, and I paid out of pocket for some services. You can do this if needed, or you can use travel insurance should you need to
1. Beloved Playa Mujeres (north of Cancun)
Best time to go: Year-round
Beloved Playa Mujeres is a couples-only resort north of Cancun, a short walk from the stunning Mujeres Beach. It has concierge service and an on-site spa and restaurant.
Book your stay at Playa Mujeres here
2. Casa Vellas in Puerto Vallarta
Best time to go: Year-round
Casa Vellas is another adult-only all-inclusive, located on the west coast of Mexico. It offers a special babymoon package, which offers mani and pedi, massage, and even a photoshoot with you and your partner.
Puerto Vallarta is becoming more popular as a destination but is less touristy than the Cancun area. It’s definitely one of the best cities to visit in Mexico, and very popular with international tourists.
I visited here while I was living in Mexico; the Pacific Ocean views are gorgeous and I would recommend it.
Check availability for Casas Vellas here
3. Puerto Escondido
Best time to go: Year-round
When I went to Puerto Escondido while living in Mexico as an exchange student. It’s a beautiful area, with some of the best beaches in the country.
One note about Puerto Escondido is that it has huge waves (it’s popular for surfing) so I would take caution with swimming, and stay somewhere with a pool so that you have access to calm waters.
I recommend heading to the Puerto Escondido Bazaar; great place to find some unique and artisan Mexican souvenirs.
Posada Real Puerto Escondido is one of the only ‘luxury’ resorts in the area – it has 2 swimming pools, access to a private beach, and serves a buffet-style breakfast.
Fun fact: The word for pregnant is Spanish is “embarazada.” Even though it sounds like the word ’embarrassed’ in English, it actually means pregnant!
Pro Tip: If you’re not sold on one of these Mexican destinations, there are countless of places in Mexico fit for a babymoon. Read my post on the safest places to visit in Mexico here.
How To Choose the Right Destination for Your Babymoon
The main things you need to consider are:
- where you live, and how far you’re willing to travel
- when during your pregnancy it would be safe to travel. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recommends sometime between 14 and 28 weeks as the safest time to travel.
✅ Find out when your ‘safe travel’ time is during your pregnancy
✅ Talk to your doctor.
✅ Look at your budget, and how far you’re willing to go based on finances and your doctor’s advice
✅ Choose one of the amazing destinations above
✅ Prepare for travelling while pregnant, with advice outlined by the CDC (which involves medication, avoiding swelling of feet, and other things to help pregnant women be as healthy, safe and comfortable as possible while travelling.)
